Is my skin really DRY, not OILY??

ok, first off, i know NOTHING about skin or skin types.this is something ive been struggling with for a long time. for years now, i have always thought i had 'oily skin', so ive been using really harsh acne products (for the annoying pimples i used to get on my chin area and around my mouth) and other products that i thought would be good to 'dry out' my oily skin. recently ive noticed that if i put moisturizer on my face and use milder, exfoliating products, my skin is all of a sudden much nicer! softer skin, pores are almost completely clear, RARELY any pimples!! not to mention my skin is supple and smooth now not oily and rough and blemished! was i wrong? do i have dry sensitive skin that is getting irritated by the harsh acne and oily skin products? can my skin actually change at my age? (22) thanks so much!

It does change. I'm 49 and my ethestician says oily skin actually prevents wrinkles. So try not to over do the harsh chemicals. Me, I washed with soap. Despite what the advertisers say, my skin looks great at nearly 50!

Actually ones skin can and will change it status over the time. A lot people tend to have oily (oiler) skin while they are young and become dry skin as they age. Depend on what kind product you've been using or simply the environment you were in, it also possible to turn normal skin to say, sensitive skin.

A dermatology once told me a simple way to recognize whether I have dry skin or not. If you are having pimple (break out) quit often, it probably means you have a oily skin in general. If you don't have breakout, you are probably have normal or dry skin.

However, doesn't matter what types of skin you have you will probably have a oily t zone that will make your face oily. A lot people call it mixed skin type but they are really not. Its normally oily, normal or dry skin with oily t zone.

If you were using oily skin products while you had dry skin, what it did is probably dried out your skin further. However, in deep cleansing process (which every skin type have to do once a while anyways), it will dry out the skin anyways but can be recovered by putting on moisturizing mask any other moisturizing steps.

So if you were using oily products on your dry skin you can revive it by provide more moist to your skin and it will gets better. At young age of 22 your skin is still in its prime stage which means it will recover pretty soon and it sound like you are already getting much better.

One tip, just because you had good result with one type of product doesn't mean it will last forever. Sometimes you have to change entire product line to adjust to your new skin condition.

Hope it helped.
